The earth has been contaminated by these sort of chemicals for decades, but it is just recently coming into the lime light. The types of chemicals being released are things like pestisides, flame retardents, personal care products and mostly pharmaceutical materials. In a study taken in 2002 done in bodies of water, mostly in lakes there were %10 ibuprofen, steriods/hormones were also 16% present in the water. This is a dangerous amount for the fish in the water, and the animals who drink out of the water. Also the same study, but now taken on land showed that wild geese are resistant to many perscription drugs because of the contamination.
These medicines are entered when people throw them in the trash, and flush them down the toilet. Waste water treatment centers do not treat medicinal compounds. So this usually gets passed back into water supplies.
A common drug that is put back into the environment is anti depressants. These anti depressants cause unnatural breeding cycles for many animals because it changes the amount of serotonin in their bodies, which regulates their breeding cycle. In humans if even small amounts are found in a pregnant womans bloodstream it maty cause her fetus to grow irregulary and cause many other problems.
So in conclusion these drugs should be managed by informing people on how to dispose of medicine properly and not let them contaminate the environment any further.
