Soy!Soy milk has been a healthy alternative for people who can not drink real milk from cows, and sow in other products is also an alternative for people who are lactose intolerent . Now there are many people choosing to eat soy products just for the taste alone. Soy is high in protein, because it is made from beans. It also contains much more fiber then milk from a cow. Another benefit of this product is a chemical called isoflavones, which a chemical closely related to estrogen. This hormone prevents things like cancer, heart disease and even more.
Soy does have all those health benefits, so many people think that it is completely low in fat, which it is not. It does have alittle fat then how much is in 2% regular milk from a cow, but it doesnt have nearly as much cholestrol. Another negative aspect of soy is that it doesnt have alot of calcium, which is what cow's milk is high in. Soy has only a quarter of the calcium that cow's milk does. But other ingredients can be added to soy to had calcium to the product.
The cholestrol lowering effect of soy is widely known, but there are certain requirements soy has to meet for this to be true.
It needs to have the following:
6.25g of soy protein
Less than 3g of fat
Less than 1g saturated fat
Less than 20g cholesterol
There are many prodcuts that are made from/out of soy. Calcium fortified milk, tofu, soy nuts, soy patties, soy cheese, soy yogurt, and soy cereal.
Later in the article I read where I got the criteria for lowering cholesterol, it explained that AHANC (American Heart Association Nutrition Commitee) says that they are no longer suggesting that you should eat soy to lower your cholesterol. This is because when you eat high amounts of soy, it only reduces your cholesterol by 3%.
People are going to keep eating soy, because it tastes wonderful. Products like SoyJoy make eating soy as entertaining as eating a candy bar.
